Toru Hatsuta Collection

Toru Hasuta is a bamboo artist born in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan, in 1980. He began studying bamboo arts in 2002 while in college, apprenticing under Kyokusho Tanaka. His work was selected for the Japan Traditional Craft Arts Exhibition (Eastern Division) in both 2010 and 2011, marking his emergence within the field of contemporary craft. In 2017, his work was added to the public collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. Centered on the tradition of Japanese bamboo basket making, Hatsuta’s practice encompasses tea ceremony utensils such as tea scoops (chashaku) and tea baskets (chakago), exploring bamboo’s potential as a natural and sustainable material deeply rooted in Japan’s cultural heritage. In recent years, Hatsuta’s practice has expanded to include forms influenced by traditional Chinese tea wares.
