Among the teas of Ureshino, kamairicha is most often defined by the character of the iron kama—the pan that gives the tea its signature roasted fragrance. Yet every so often a tea emerges that shifts the balance. This kabuse of 100% Okumidori from the Onohara family is one such rarity. Shaded before harvest, the leaves develop a deeper sweetness and supple texture, allowing the cultivar’s fragrance to rise clearly above the warm, fired aroma of the pan. The result is a tea that feels unusually generous—bigger and juicier than one expects from kamairicha—while still retaining the style’s unmistakable character. Despite its presence on the palate, there is a delicacy here that feels distinctly seasonal - reminding me of early Spring in Japan. What is perhaps most compelling is the harmony the tea achieves: though a single cultivar, it drinks with the balance and integration of a carefully composed blend, all while preserving the gentle charm that makes Okumidori so beloved. It is a pleasure to welcome this new tea into our collection and to share another hidden gem from the fields of Kyushu.
